HEMGRAPHHEM
A new generation of composite membranes for hemodialysis based on derivatized graphene
The present project aims to synthesize a new generation of composite membrane materials for artificial kidneys based on biocompatible polymer and derivatized graphite. The novelty of the proposed theme is given by the covalent bonding of the membranes to the polymer membrane structure to prevent their entrainment into the bloodstream and also by the versatility of the synthesized membranes that will be provided for one day hemodialysis (heavy metal intoxication, for example) as well as for hemodialysis as the currently applied therapeutic method. In the first case, the graphene will be derivatized with complexing molecules that retain the reactive cation to separate, and in the latter case with specific proteins that improve the separation efficiency of the membranes used.
